Kitesurfing in Antigua: The Complete Local Guide

Whether you're planning your first kite trip or searching for your next Caribbean destination, Antigua offers some of the most diverse kitesurfing conditions in the region. With warm turquoise water, consistent trade winds, over 365 beaches, and countless offshore islands, every day on the water can be completely different. Unlike many destinations that rely on a single launch beach, Antigua gives riders access to a wide variety of locations - flat-water lagoons, protected bays, long downwinders, and open ocean riding all within easy reach. At Kelsick Watersports, our boat-based approach lets us choose the best location every day based on the wind, tide, and your experience level.

    Why Kitesurf in Antigua?

Antigua has quietly become one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets for kitesurfing. The island combines reliable trade winds - generally out of the east, sometimes swinging northeast or southeast - with warm water, beautiful scenery, and an incredible variety of riding locations.

Because Antigua is relatively compact, it's possible to experience completely different conditions within a short boat ride. One day you could be learning in waist-deep flat water inside the North Sound, while the next you might be cruising along remote islands or exploring untouched coastline.

Our season typically runs from November through July, with the strongest and most consistent winds arriving between December and May. Water temperatures remain warm throughout the year, meaning you'll usually only need board shorts or a swimsuit.

    Why We Teach From Boats

Almost every lesson and adventure we run is boat-supported, and it's the single biggest reason our students progress so much faster than the typical beach-based programme.

From a beach, you spend most of your session walking upwind, untangling lines, and waiting for a safe window to relaunch. From the boat, we drop you straight into clean wind and flat water, reset you in seconds when you drift downwind, and keep an instructor within a few metres at all times. Your actual time on the kite - especially during the water start, which is the biggest milestone for new kiters - is multiplied many times over.

It also unlocks spots that are simply not reachable on foot: glassy lagoons inside the reef, uncrowded sandbars, and downwinders between islands. You can absolutely learn from a beach elsewhere and save some money, but you'll learn slower. With us the lesson costs what it costs, and you leave with far more water time and real progress to show for it.

Why boat-based coaching speeds up your kitesurfing progression.

    Best Kitesurfing Spots in Antigua

Every rider is looking for something different. Some want perfectly flat water to learn, while others are searching for long cruising runs or scenic downwinders. These are some of our favourite locations around Antigua and Barbuda.

    Dutchman's Bay

Dutchman's Bay is home to Kelsick Watersports and the starting point for many of our lessons and adventures. Located on Antigua's northeast coast, it provides easy access to the island's best riding areas and offers stunning views across the Caribbean Sea.

Depending on the conditions, Dutchman's Bay can be an enjoyable place for experienced riders, but for lessons we often use it as a departure point before heading by boat to quieter water.

    Jabberwock Beach

Jabberwock Beach is Antigua's most recognised kitesurfing beach and has been the centre of the local kite community for many years.

With reliable trade winds and a wide sandy beach, it's a popular location for independent riders and visitors travelling with their own equipment. On windy days you'll often find local kiters enjoying freestyle sessions and long tacks along the coastline.

North Sound - Our Favourite Riding Area

If we had to recommend one place to experience Antigua by kite, it would be the North Sound.

Protected by offshore reefs and surrounded by beautiful islands, the North Sound offers miles of calm, turquoise water that's perfect for both beginners and experienced riders. This is where we conduct many of our private kiteboarding lessons because the conditions allow students to progress safely without crowded beaches or obstacles.

The area is also home to some of Antigua's most spectacular scenery. During a session you may ride past Maiden Island, explore the waters surrounding Jumby Bay, or stop near The Hut restaurant while cruising through crystal-clear water.

Because we operate from a coach boat, we're able to access areas that simply aren't possible from the beach, giving our guests a completely different experience from a traditional kite school.

    Green Island & Nonsuch Bay

Located on Antigua's southeast coast, Green Island and Nonsuch Bay offer some of the island's most breathtaking scenery.

The area combines clear blue water, offshore islands, and consistent wind, making it a favourite destination for experienced riders looking to explore beyond the main beaches. The coastline here feels remote and untouched, providing an unforgettable Caribbean riding experience.

    Cades Reef

Cades Reef is best known for its spectacular reef system and crystal-clear water, but it's also an incredible place to experience Antigua from a kite.

Depending on the wind and sea state, this section of coastline offers beautiful cruising with dramatic views along the island's southwest coast.

    Barbuda

Around 40 miles north of Antigua lies Barbuda, one of the Caribbean's most untouched islands.

Known for its endless white and pink sand beaches, shallow turquoise water, and complete sense of isolation, Barbuda is a dream destination for adventurous kiters. Crossing between Antigua and Barbuda requires suitable weather and experience, but the reward is one of the most unique kitesurfing destinations anywhere in the Caribbean.

    Explore Antigua by Kite

One of the biggest advantages of kitesurfing in Antigua is that the journey can be just as memorable as the destination.

Rather than riding the same beach every day, many of our guided adventures involve exploring different parts of the island, visiting offshore islands, cruising through the North Sound, and discovering hidden beaches that are only accessible by boat.

Whether you're chasing perfectly flat water, scenic downwinders, or simply looking to experience Antigua from a different perspective, every session becomes its own adventure.
