    Kitesurfing at Jabberwock Beach, Antigua

If you've researched kiting in Antigua, one beach comes up again and again: Jabberwock. It's the main drive-to kite spot on the island, the one you'll see tagged in most Antigua kite videos, and the natural meeting point for the local community. This guide covers what makes it work, who it's best for, and how it fits alongside Dutchman's Bay - the quieter neighbouring beach where we run our boat-based lessons and charters.

Why Jabberwock Beach is Antigua's #1 Kite Spot

Jabberwock sits on Antigua's north-east coast, directly in the path of the Caribbean trade winds. The wind is generally out of the east, sometimes shifting to northeast or southeast, and almost always onshore - which is exactly what you want for a safe, easy session. If anything goes wrong, the wind pushes you back to the beach rather than out to sea.

It's a proper drive-to spot: park up, walk a few metres to the sand, pump up and launch. The bay is wide and open with a sandy bottom close to shore, so launching and landing are straightforward for anyone with a bit of experience.

Just as important, Jabberwock is where the local kite community gathers. On a good day you'll find riders of every level out on the water - which means good vibes, casual coaching between mates, and someone around to help with a launch or a self-rescue.

    Conditions at a Glance

Wind: reliable trade winds, generally east and sometimes northeast or southeast, always onshore. Peak season December through May, with usable wind November through July.

Water: warm year-round, boardshorts or bikini most days. Sandy bottom in the launch zone, reef further out.

Best for: intermediate and advanced riders who want to session freely and be part of the community.

Getting there: about 20 minutes by car from St. John's, easy to reach from most north-coast hotels and villas.

Learning at Jabberwock vs. Learning With Us

Jabberwock is a great place to session if you already know what you're doing. For learning, it's fine, but it's a beach-style lesson - which means a lot of walking. Every time you drift downwind (and beginners drift downwind constantly), you're packing up, walking back up the beach, and starting again. Instructors work from the shore, so the coaching cues you get are shouted from a distance.

That's why we teach from a boat, based just around the corner at Dutchman's Bay. Same wind, same water, completely different lesson. You get dropped straight into clean wind, we reset you in seconds when you drift, and the coach is a couple of metres away the whole time. Beginners hit the water start dramatically faster this way, and improving riders can access flat lagoons, downwinders and quieter spots that you simply can't reach from the beach.

If you're an experienced rider visiting Antigua and just want a session, head to Jabberwock and enjoy - it's a proper Caribbean kite beach. If you're learning, or you want progression sessions with a coach, our boat-based programme at Dutchman's Bay is the fastest way to level up.

Dutchman's Bay - Where We Actually Teach

Dutchman's Bay is the neighbouring beach - just a couple of minutes upwind from Jabberwock and literally next door. It shares the same trade winds and the same warm, shallow water, but it's quieter, less crowded and ideally set up for boat-based coaching.

Our lessons and Private Watersports Charters launch from here. From the boat we can move to whichever spot the wind is best on the day - Jabberwock included - so you're never locked to one beach.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I kitesurf at Jabberwock Beach as a beginner?

You can take beach-style lessons at Jabberwock, but expect to spend a lot of time walking the beach after each drift downwind. If you want to progress faster, our boat-based lessons at neighbouring Dutchman's Bay put you in clean wind with a coach next to you the whole time.

Do I need my own kite gear at Jabberwock?

You can bring your own, but you don't have to. You can rent kite gear from us at Dutchman's Bay, and rentals are usually available on-site at Jabberwock too. Our lesson and charter students use our gear as part of the programme.

What's the difference between Jabberwock and Dutchman's Bay?

They're neighbouring beaches sharing the same trade winds. Jabberwock is the busier community kite spot with drive-to access. Dutchman's Bay is quieter, and it's where our boat-based lessons and charters launch from.

When is the best time of year to kitesurf here?

December through May is peak season - the most reliable, strongest trade winds. November and June/July are still solid with slightly lighter, more variable conditions.
